How Smoking Affects Appetite

It is not an uncommon practice for smokers to light up instead of eating, challenging an already deteriorating health that has been compromised by smoking.

It is OK to postpone a meal until later, but it is not OK when you do it frequently. It’s especially not OK when you substitute it with junk food and even worse when you substitute it with a cigarette. And that often is what happens with smokers.

Obeying our body’s craving for something -- now -- and knowing that nothing will provide that something more quickly than the drug in a cigarette, we light up.

Never doubt that the tobacco industry manipulates every aspect of tobacco, from sales to every single cigarette it can entice you to smoke. Its CEOs are not concerned with the consequences to your diet or your health.

One of the advantages held by tobacco giants in getting you to smoke (instead of eat) is that nicotine can be delivered to your brain via a cigarette faster than if you mainlined it.

Once delivered, the nicotine takes the edge off your appetite. You’re no longer as hungry as you were. You are content to put off eating a while longer. You feel energized, but in fact, all that has happened is that you’ve been drugged (again).

In another hour or so the process will repeat this. You’ll need another cigarette, not because you want one, but because you’re hungry, and while it is your hunger that will be calling on you to respond, it is the almighty cigarette that will be answering the dinner bell.

The vicious cycle continues around the clock, throughout however much of the day and night you are awake.

It is hard to believe that in the history of our world, not a single government has made an effort to bring the tobacco industry to its knees.

On the contrary, the opposite is true. Precious few legislators are willing to challenge the status quo and even fewer have ever even drafted a bill that seriously addresses the problem.

Smoking is now known to kill about 60% of the Vitamin C in smokers, all the more alarming because nothing happens in the human body without Vitamin C. Nothing.

The shortage that results is exacerbated with every additional cigarette smoked, first because 60% of the body’s Vitamin C has already been destroyed and secondly because, instead of eating a square meal that would replenish that Vitamin C, a cigarette has been substituted (again).

Compounding the fracture is that when we finally do pause long enough to eat, it is often the case that the body, now depleted of solid fuel energy (like protein) needs an immediate infusion. We satisfy this emergency with something choc full of sugar because we instinctively know how quickly sugar converts to energy. And the final insult to the body is that when we’re done with our sugar meal, we will cap off with a dessert of ....? More cigarettes, of course.

The least realized benefit of your victory over addiction is that your brain gets better too.

We tend to think of that object perched atop our shoulders for the mind that it is but rarely for the brain that it also is. But it is a brain, just as physical as the eyes or nose or toes, and as such it needs solid nutrition every bit as much as the rest of you.

It’s been getting hammered by nicotine too. Are you surprised you’ve never stopped to consider that once you quit smoking, its condition begins to improve along with all the rest of your physical body?
